Clyde had a day full of adventure and freedom yesterday.
He went on his first ever walk... outside!
Before domestication, ferrets were outdoor hunters. They would hunt rabbits and mice for their masters. By nature, they are carnivores, and Clyde's natural habitat would be the great outdoors. So, I thought to myself: I should let him experience all the wonderful things nature has to offer.
I put a collar on him, connected the leash, and we set out for an adventure. However, an adventure of this magnitude involves some extra explanation other than digital words.
Listen to the podcast and watch the videos below to learn all about Clyde's first experience outdoors.

Hide & Seek
I'm convinced Phinn is aware of the game "hide and seek."
I often find her trying to hide in small, dark places. Whenever I walk by, she tries to shrink her body down, hiding herself as well as possible in her spot. She thinks I can't see her, so I choose to play along in her little game.
I search high and low. I call out her name into my apartment. And then once some time has passed, she always cracks. She will give herself away by leaping out of her hiding spot, trot over to me and demand my love and affection.
Here are two pictures of Phinn hiding in her favorite spots: the couch cushions and the shower curtain.

Maybe she hasn't mastered the rules of the game "hide and seek" entirely.
But one thing's for sure: she's got the rules of being adorable down to a science.

Hobs & Jills
Most people do extensive research about the type of pet they want before they officially make up their mind and commit.
And then there are people like me who don't do any intense investigations on the type of pet they want: they just go for it with both feet in the water.
I always knew from a young age that I loved ferrets and really wanted to own one some day. But I never searched to find out what exactly made these creatures unique or what their history as a breed was.
So, as I was watching television earlier today, I thought to myself, "Honestly, what exactly is a ferret...?" This led me to search online for interesting facts about a ferret.
One of my favorite interesting facts: a male ferret is called a Hob and a female ferret is called a Jill. How stinking cute is that. Below I'm linking to a list of interesting facts about ferrets for any of you wanting to know the odds and ins of how these little creatures operate.
Happy exploring!

Sleepy Dayz
The leaves are beginning to change colors, and the days are becoming shorter. Fall is a time for great food, great company, and most importantly... great sleep.
I've noticed that as the season has changed from Summer to Fall, my animals have changed their sleeping patterns as well.
Both Clyde and Phinn seem to be sleeping a lot more than they did during the summer. Especially Clyde. And every pet owner knows that the best time to take a relentless amount of pictures of your animals is while they're asleep.
Below, I've created a slideshow video of adorable pictures of Phinn and Clyde sleeping. Enjoy!

The Return Of The Sweater
Life has been hectic lately, but I finally had some down time today to put on Phinn's sweater for her.
I figured she was going to resist as I put her into the cozy, pink fabric, but to my surprise she was quite cooperative. As I put her arms through the two little arm holes, I thought to myself, "she might actually enjoy this sweater I bought for her."
Boy, was I wrong.
As soon as the sweater was securely on her, Phinn tried with all her might to get it off. She did flips and twists, turns and slides, but nothing seemed to work for her. I watched in amusement for a while: her moves and agitated behavior were actually quite cute.
Finally, after I decided I'd had enough entertainment, I removed the sweater from her furry body and put it back into the closet for safe keeping.
Below is a video of Phinn "dancing" around in her pink Washburn sweater. Hopefully she's not too upset with me for making her wear it.

Definition Of Dramatic
Clyde had an extremely rough day today.
The poor guy didn't get to be out of his cage much more than a couple hours here and there. It always breaks my heart when I'm so busy with school and tennis because he doesn't get to have free reign around the house like Phinn does.
Phinn has earned her freedom and privileges. I can trust her alone when I'm not at the apartment. Clyde on the other hand is a different story.
I still remember the first day I bought Clyde and took him home. Within his first couple minutes of exploring the perimeters, he located a small hole underneath my dishwasher and literally went up inside my kitchen walls. I had a panic attack because I genuinely thought I was never going to see the little guy again.
Ever since then, my little nugget must be in his cage at all times If I'm not home or if I'm asleep.
Here's a photo of Clyde in all his dramatic despair last night laying on my dirty, smelly tennis socks.

Sincerely, A Very Intrigued Pet Owner
Phinn has begun to take part in a very strange activity. I call it scaling the bed.
Late at night and early in the morning, she gets pretty squirrelly and has recently been attaching her claws to the bed and gliding across the entire bed as if she was on a hovercraft.
The movement is kind of hard to explain, so I'll let the attached video do the talking. But I am curious...
Does anyone else's animals do this or is it just mine?

Phinn's Magic Ball
As of recently, Phinn has become fairly attached to her newest toy: a pink and purple sparkly ball. I just recently bought her this toy from a pet store, and she and her little ball have been inseparable ever since.
Phinn enjoys cuddling with her ball, playing fetch with her ball, and attempting to ambush and attack her ball.
If there are any kitten owners out there, I definitely recommend purchasing a small sparkly ball for your kitten to play with. And for only about a dollar, both you and your kitten get some pretty solid entertainment from it.

Clyde The Shoe Sniffer
After many long days and nights, the world is at peace again. I got home early Monday morning around 2:30 a.m. and have finally been able to spend some quality time with Phinn and Clyde.
Now, it's a little chillier and rainier here in Kansas than it was in Arizona. That being said, I've had to crank out the rain boots. What's the importance of this you might wonder? Well, my rain boots are Clyde's favorite toy to play with. (Or should I say play in).
Place a shoe in front of that ferret and he'll dig his head in the hole trying to find a tunnel to China. In fact, I've been watching him burry his head into my tennis shoes the entire time I've been typing this post.
Anyways, I'm going to share one of my all time favorite pictures of Clyde with my rain boots. Who knew rainy days could make an animal so dang happy?

Separation Anxiety
Okay, maybe I'm being a little dramatic with the title, but I really do miss my two kiddos back home.
These six days will be the longest they've been without me, and I hope they're holding up okay. Like I've mentioned before, luckily, whenever I leave for tennis I have amazing parents and siblings who take on the task of watching Phinn and Clyde.
My dad called me yesterday while he was at my apartment and told me that my pets are doing great. During that time, my dad and Phinn played fetch while Clyde spent his entire time preoccupied with eating. He is one of the biggest fatties I know, but don't tell him I said that.
Although it will be super late, I'm really looking forward to seeing them on Sunday night. It'll be around midnight when I get back to Kansas, but don't worry my furry friends... I will stay up into the early morning hours to spend time with you. And then I will go take FOUR exams that fall between Monday and Tuesday.
Oh, why do life's busiest moments all seem to collide at the same time.

Surprise, Arizona
All apologies for my little absence on this blog. Life has been pretty hectic for me this past week!
Although this blog is about the adventures of Phinn and Clyde, every once in awhile a pet owner has to go on their own adventures too.
I have been in Surprise, Arizona all week competing in a tennis tournament, and let me tell you... my mind has been very distracted down here. So sadly, this means Phinn will have to try on her adorable pink sweater when I return to Kansas on Sunday night.
In the mean time, I'm going to post a map of where I am at in case anyone is interested. I had never heard of Surprise, Arizona before, but it is "surprisingly" a very unique spot (see what I did there).
All bad joking aside, if any of you ever get a chance to travel to Arizona, I highly recommend you visit Surprise. It is where the Royals do their spring training, and the atmosphere of this place is so casual and laid back. Anyone who likes this type of vibe would love Surprise!

Phinn The Fashionista
As a college student, I believe in supporting the university in which I attend. That is why I recently bought Phinn a Washburn University sweater. The sweater is pink with a sparkly blue Washburn logo, and I cannot wait to put Phinn into it.
Do I think Phinn will like wearing the sweater? Absolutely not.
Am I still going to at least put it on her to see how ridiculous she looks in it? Absolutely yes.
As I sit on my couch right now writing this post, Phinn is sitting down on the fireplace staring at me with loving eyes. I hope she doesn't get too upset with me for putting a pink sweater on her. She doesn't seem like much of a girly girl...
More pictures are to come in my following blog post of Phinn the fashionista, but for now I'm attaching a picture below of the sweater itself.

True Heartbreak
No-one ever prepares you for the true heartbreak of being a pet owner: leaving your pets.
Every once in awhile obligations come up which force us to pack our bags and leave our kiddos behind. This past weekend I got a little taste of what it's like to be a few states away from my animals, and let me tell ya... it was much harder than I anticipated.
I had a tennis tournament this past weekend and had to leave my animals on Friday and did not return until Monday night around 11:00. Luckily, my sister volunteered to babysit my animals while I was gone, but I worried about how they would handle me being away for four days.
When the tournament finally concluded on Monday, we ventured back to Kansas. The car ride felt like days, but we made it back to Topeka and as I arrived to my apartment, I couldn't contain my excitement as I walked up the stairs. When I opened the door, Phinn and Clyde acted like little children on Christmas morning. They were so happy their momma was finally home.
And although I was mentally and physically exhausted from the tournament, I forced myself to stay up for a couple hours so I could hang out with them.
They say it's nice to have someone to come home to. For me it just happens to be a couple of adorably furry creatures.

The Ferocious Feline
Ferrets love to eat, sleep, and sleep some more.
In fact, most ferrets sleep about 18 hours a day on average. Most of the time when I let Clyde out to play he doesn't last very long before he passes out in unusual places. Sometimes I find him asleep on my bathroom mat, behind the trash can in my kitchen, and even in the litter box room. However, his all time favorite place to catch some z's is under or near the couch.
Now, we've all had that friend or sibling that we love to try and annoy. That person that minds their own business but you just can't resist the temptation to mess with them... Well that individual for Phinn happens to be Clyde.
Every time Clyde passes out and makes the mistake of falling asleep in the open, Phinn simply cannot resist the urge to toy with him. The poor boy gets tackled, licked to death, and sat on by this ferocious feline, and I've got the evidence to prove it.
Maybe one day Clyde will be able to rest in peace.

The Feeling of Fall
It's the most wonderful time of the year...
And I'm not talking about Christmas. Fall has finally begun. The leaves are just beginning to turn and the hot summer days we have grown accustomed to are withering away and being replaced by that lovely Fall air.
I love everything about fall. The food, the weather, the scenery, and most of all, the holidays. Thanksgiving and Halloween are my upmost favorite holidays of the year. And with Halloween right around the corner, I began thinking: now that I have animals I can have some fun with this years Halloween.
I always swore I'd never be the pet owner to dress their pets in ridiculously cute costumes, but you know the line... "never say never." And really, what better way to celebrate this holiday other than dressing up a baby kitten and a ferret together.
Needless to say, I've been shopping around online for the perfect costumes for my two babies. I've attached a couple links below to some stores that offer Halloween pet costumes just in case there are any of you out there wanting to dress up your animals in unnecessary costumes as well.
Happy (almost) Halloween everyone! May your apple cider be warm and your pumpkins be masterfully carved.

Opposites Attract
Today, I find myself feeling very fortunate that I have two animals that get along so well together. It's never a guarantee that animals will form a strong bond with each other... in fact, sometimes its the polar opposite.
Often times, pairing animals together can turn into a disaster. You might have a cat and a dog living under the same roof that despise each other. Sometimes female animals can never seem to get along: they constantly face off with each other and strive for superiority. Or, perhaps you have two animals that are constantly fighting with each other and it creates havoc in a household.
I often think to myself, "What if my cat absolutely hated my ferret and constantly tried to attack it? Would I have to give up one of my animals that I love because I feared for its safety? What would I do if this "shot in the dark" combination just hadn't worked?" You never really know what you're going to get when you bring animals together. That's why it feels like you've just hit the lottery when pairing animals together works out.
I find it especially heartwarming when animals from opposite ends of the spectrum form a beautifully uncommon friendship.
So, as an ode to my animals unique and unusual friendship, I've added a Youtube video below of some of the most oddly captivating animal friendships out there today.

True Life: Clyde Has An Obsession With Pants
Clyde loves pants.
Any pants. All pants. Big pants. Small pants.
He especially enjoys flowy pants: pajamas to be specific. The little sucker will bite the bottom of those pajama pants and play tug of war with me, teeth clinging onto the fabric for dear life. His strength and willpower is really quite impressive.
Another one of Clyde's favorite things to do with pants is crawl up into them.
Ferrets love to explore and stick their heads into places that seem hidden to them. It makes them feel like they've discovered a really cool, secret hiding place. So what does this mean for Clyde's momma? (me). It means that whenever I am using the restroom, he tries to hide in my pants.
Talk about no privacy.
Click on the links below to watch Clyde's mischievous and ornery behavior in his war on pants.

School, School, Go Away
Hello again, everyone!
Today is a day just like any other day... except for one thing. Today is my birthday! I have finally broken out of the teen years and shifted into my 20's. Now, I'm not one of those people who thinks the whole word should stand still on my birthday. In fact, I just see my birthday as any other day in the year.
However, this morning I did have just one simple wish for my birthday: to stay at home all day and hangout with Phinn and Clyde. How am I supposed to get up at 6:30 a.m., go to class, tennis practice, and weights when I have this adorable face tempting me to stay home and hangout with her?
I packed up my backpack and went over to Phinn one last time before I left. She was laying on the fireplace purring and meowing as if she was begging me not to leave. I sat down by her and began to love on her, and she put her adorable little paw on my shoulder.
As I got up to leave, she stared at me with the solemn expression that Puss & Boots from Shrek mastered so well. Goodness gracious, who knew being a parent was going to be such a tear jerker!

Masters of Play Time
Phinn and Clyde are masters of play time.
I have never laughed so hard from watching a couple of animals play together. From the very first day I brought these two home, they clicked with each other. Phinn and Clyde love spending their time playing with one another, and the fascinating thing is that they both know each others limits. They know how soft and hard to bite, how quick to run and jump, and how to hide from one another efficiently.
For example, Clyde knows that Phinn is too big to fit under the couch. If Clyde is being ambushed by Phinn, he will scurry under the couch for protection until he can regroup and come up with his next strategy.
Phinn on the other hand knows that if she needs to get away from Clyde for any reason, all she has to do is jump up onto a piece of furniture because Clyde's vertical jump is nothing short of pitiful...
I have com to find out that during play time, my baby kitten Phinn is the intelligent one who has mastered many acrobatic moves and skills in order to defeat Clyde. As for Clyde... lets just say his main strategy for taking down Phinn is to jump and leap into the air in attempts to distract her. (I think Clyde believes that if he looks dumb enough she'll go easy on him).
Below, I've attached a video of my two babies playing together. I hope you all enjoy watching as much as I do!

Baths and Bowel Movements
Today, Clyde found himself in treacherous territory...
Yes, today was bath day.
Ferrets have a naturally musky odor, so bathing them every once and awhile is what I like to call a pretty good idea.
I would love to say that the bath went smoothly; however, the bath scared the poop out of Clyde... literally.
As I was scrubbing Clyde's fur, the look of pure terror filled his eyes. Clearly, my sweet Clyde had never been given a bath before, and this was completely new for him. As I finished washing his fur, I grabbed a towel to dry him off. Suddenly, as I picked him up, he pooped himself. And that poop went
All. Over. My. Floor.
I instantly felt empathy for this weird little creature. He must have been scared out of his mind. But more than anything, I felt empathy for myself because I was the one who got stuck cleaning this lovely mess of his.
Next time I bathe Clyde I'll make sure he uses the litter box beforehand.
Until next time,
Madeline

The Start of a Mischievous Adventure
Hi friends!
My name is Madeline Hill and I am a sophomore at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.
Laugh if you must, but my life-long dream has been to own a ferret. (Of course, by lifelong I mean my short existence of 20 years). However, no matter how hard I tried to convince my mom as a kid to let me own a ferret, I knew my chances were non-existent and I watched as my dreams withered away...
Although my mom never let me own a ferret during my childhood, everyone knows the cheesy line: "never give up on your dreams." And I refused to give up on mine.
After many years of patience, this past summer my dreams finally became a reality. I got my own apartment where I was given free reign over what animals resided there. And you guessed it, I bought a baby ferret and named him Clyde.
Now, I'm a firm believer that animals should have companions. The logical explanation would have been for me to purchase another ferret. Ferrets are sociable animals and they get along great with one another. There are very few cases in which ferrets do not get along...
So what did I do? Just the opposite.
I rescued a baby kitten from the humane shelter and named her Phinn. I looked up to the sky hoping that somehow this combination of a baby kitten and a baby ferret would work. If it didn't, I was in for a serious nightmare. However, life is all about taking risks, and mine seemed to pay off.
From the moment they met, Phinn and Clyde have been the best dynamic duo to exist. They cuddle with each other, clean one another, wrestle and play with each other, eat the same food, and most importantly, they both use the same litter box. (Which means less clean up for their mom, wahoo).
Every day with Phinn and Clyde is an adventure: their adventure. I'm just the lucky one who gets to be apart of it. This blog will be the grounds for the adventures of Phinn and Clyde.
But with adventure, mischief is always right around the corner...
